Known sometimes as The Swedish Sphinx, Greta Garbo was born on this date in 1905.
She began her career in silent films in her native Sweden and migrated to Hollywood where she became one of MGM's biggest, most elusive stars.
She was a gorgeous woman and a wonderful actress. After leaving Hollywood in 1946, she spent the rest of her life as a recluse in a New York apartment dodging photographers.
She died in 1990.
