Back in November I had to fly to Key West, FL, and at the last 100 miles, you are over the gulf till you catch sight of the keys. I thought to myself, what would people do if the plane had to come down over water? I began to obsess about it, asking all my Atlanta friends when I got home the same question. Most got tired of my paranoia or blew me off, but one friend who has studied for his pilot's license explained that all planes ARE gliders, and that by keeping the nose up, and skidding in on the tail, one can make a safe water landing. The dangers include bust up of the fuselage, or a quick sinking. He felt that few people would ever survive the possibility.
I was chilled by the answer, and one night in my car in December, prayed aloud fervently and got into a thing with God about it, like, why do humans even take the risk? Why do we put 8 zillion planes up in the sky every day? Why do you allow this God?
God, all I know is, I pray that every day your angels go around and help keep their engines running, or let them land softly and find a smooth course, or if by water, let them touch the water gently--and for absolute, please God, may your angels help keep the fuselage doors above water till all the passengers can get out to the rafts.
If I ever see this happening, then I know that you have a very serious concern of airline safety, too!
