On this date in 1904, Enrico Caruso signed his first contract with Victor Records. He had debuted at the Metropolitan Opera just two months before. His family is still receiving almost a million dollars a year in royalties from Victor!
He recorded into a horn, not a microphone. And he is singularly responsible for the success of the gramophone as well as the recording industry. He was the first singer to benefit from hearing himself sing. And he had contract approval of all his recordings before they could be released to the public!
And Caruso is the greatest tenor ever to sing anywhere. Period.
