On this date in 1908 Conductor Arturo Toscanini made his debut in the United States. He appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, conducting Aida. He had participated (as a cellist) in the world premiere of Aida in 1871.
He conducted the first performances of La Boheme and Turandot by Puccini. He was a rabid anti-fascist against Mussolini in Italy and left his native land in protest.
And he created the Symphony of the Air for NBC radio and television, broadcasting live orchestral classical music throughout the land for many years.
He was a musical tyrant, many performers didn't like him. But the public worshipped him and he has left a recorded legacy which is treasured to this day by all.
