Van Johnson
Long known as MGM's "Golden Boy", today is his birthday. He was born in 1913 (you do the math, I'm too tired!)
He was a delightful presence on the screen in many, many films from A to Z. After he left films he appeared on Broadway in "La Cage Aux Folles".
He also toured many regional theatres playing in "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying." When he came to my best friend's theatre to play the role, my friend was assigned the task of picking Van up from the airport.
My friend did as he was asked and when Van was loaded into the car he nonchalantly reached across the seat and grabbed my friend's crotch. Yes, crotch.
My friend quickly removed Van's hand only to have Van say: "Oh it's all right, I'm a movie star." Van must have been in his 60's at the time!
I'm not judging, I'm just telling the tale. Don't shoot the messenger, please.
