Born on this date in 1926 Andy Griffith is a friend of mine. I met him in 1972 when I performed in The Lost Colony in Manteo, North Carolina. Andy spent his summers in Manteo and his two children, Sam and Dixie, were in the show with me. Andy used to stand off stage and watch my antics in front of the audience. (I was shameless, as usual.)
Andy is a fine actor and comedian, having appeared in television all his life, but also in one of the finest films ever made: A Face In The Crowd. Make sure you see that one if you can.
Andy used to say to me, "Richard, you are the funniest fag I ever knew! If I had a TV show, I'd put you on it tomorrow."
My reply? "Andy, have you ever had sex with me?"
"Well, nope, Richard, I haven't", was his stunned reply.
"Then how do you know? I rest my case". And Andy is still my friend to this day.
