GENE NELSON: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Gene Nelson was born on this date in 1920. He is considered by many in the know, to be Hollywood's finest male dancer. Yes, even over Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.
He starred in many films with the beloved Doris Day and was also Will Parker in the movie of Rodgers & Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA!.
And he was featured in Stephen Sondheim's ground-breaking FOLLIES on Broadway. Gene died Sep 16, 1996.

I think Gene Nelson was a great dancer and extremely underated. Also unlucky enough to be in the Astaire/Kelly era.

I think Gene Nelson was the greatest of all the male film dancers. He was a trained gymnast and ice skater, in addition to being trained in many types of dance, including ballet. He could dance in any style and do it brilliantly. He combined the elegance of Astaire with the ballet training and athleticism of Kelly, and could dance better than either one of them. They hogged the spotlight, but Nelson was the best dancer of all. In addition, he had to be the most graceful human being I've ever seen...and that wow factor! You'd watch him and say, "Oh he's not going to do THAT!"..and then he would. Gene Nelson was also an excellent dramatic actor and also had a terrific sense of comic timing. He was so underrated, and he shouldn't have been.
