The divine Mary Wickes was born on this date in 1910.
Mary first appeared on Broadway and came to Hollywood to recreate her Broadway role of "Nurse Preen" in The Man Who Came to Dinner. Happily, she stayed in Hollywood until her death on Oct 22, 1995.
Many will remember her as a nun in Sister Act and many, many funny roles both in the movies and on television. I especially remember her driving the school bus for Rosalind Russell in The Trouble With Angels - another nun role.
She portrayed another nurse in Now Voyager with Bette Davis. She was the nurse to Gladys Cooper, Bette's horror of a mother in the film. In Mary's most memorable scene in the film, she puts brandy in Gladys' toddy to make her sleep just a little more soundly. Discovering this, Bette says to Mary on the staircase - (always on the staircase with Bette) "Dora, I suspect you're a treasure!"
And Mary Wickes was, indeed, a treasure for us all. Rest in peace, old girl.
