Yma Sumac, the Peruvian Diva has died. She had an amazing voice of many octaves from bass to highest soprano - and she used every one of them.
I first saw her in Atlanta at the old Municipal Auditorium in the 50's. The curtain went up, the orchestra started and this gigantic dragon came on stage spitting smoke and fire. And out of its mouth came Yma chirping like some wacko bird and jumping around the stage like Lucille Ball in a comedy ballet. Her music was written for her by her husband Moises Vivanco, and they made many recordings in the 50's.
Many people accused her of actually being Amy Camus from Lima, Ohio (her name spelled backwards.) I don't know about that. But I do know Yma/Amy was a big camp.
My favorite album of hers is "The Legend Of The Sun Virgin." And I always quipped: "She was a legend, but she was no virgin!" Rest In Peace, Yma/Amy. You deserve it, girl.

Or take a look. I'm not making this up, you know!!
