HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARY MARTIN!!

Mary Martin (1913-1990)

Mary Martin WAS Broadway, much like her compatriot Ethel Merman.

Mary was the original Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific", the original Maria in "The Sound of Music" and she created the role of Peter in the musical of "Peter Pan" and also played that role on live television in color, back when color was a very rare thing on TV.

And Mary and Ethel appeared live on television in a classic duet which lasted about 17 minutes. The show was broadcast on all three networks as part of the Ford Motor Company 50th Anniversary Show.

Mary was the eternal optimist, always smiling. A great singer, actress and personality.

I was privileged to see her perform live in Atlanta when she toured in 1958 with "An Evening With Mary Martin". And yes, she flew in Atlanta as Peter Pan. I'll never forget it.

They don't make 'em like Mary anymore.

What did she and Viv sing? I am so queer. When I read your e-mail, I thought it said Mary MARTINI...I didn't know that cocktail.
