Margaret Mitchell (1900 - 1949)
Margaret Mitchell was the Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of "Gone With the Wind". Those of us from Atlanta also called her "Peggy," at least my mother did. Mitchell was born in Atlanta on this date in 1900.
The world premiere movie of the book was probably the biggest day in Atlanta history up to 1939 (except maybe for the day that damn Yankee Sherman set fire to the place.) My mother went to that premiere and when she met Clark Gable, she fainted. Mama could always spot a good thing!
It is ironic that just a few years later, Mitchell was killed by a speeding car when she stepped off the curb without looking to cross the street to a movie theatre in her home town. She is, to the day, revered as a saint in Atlanta. And well she should be!
