The oysters were fabulous and well-appreciated (by those who eat oysters!) They were not Florida, however. They were Chesapeake. I think I may have put too much cayenne in, but again, those who love spicy were in heaven. And I think I used too many bread crumbs. But I really worked on the herbs in the crumbs, using fresh thyme and parsley - and that made a great difference. And plenty of garlic (4 cloves!!)
The funny thing was the "young folk" (in their 20's) who literally didn't know what a congealed salad was! Those our age (and over) ate my Orange Delight with great relish. The 20-somethings wouldn't touch it. That left more for us "ancients" to enjoy.
There was drama when the oven caught on fire when we took the turkey out. It blazed because they then put in a glazed ham, and some of the glaze dripped on the oven floor. Funny, I didn't see anyone eating any ham!
And I'm always amazed at people insisting on rolls at a meal filled with sweet and white potatoes, dressing and all that. They made literally 10 tubes of crescent rolls!! And only about 1/3 of them were eaten. They're being saved now to dry out and made bread crumbs. Never waste anything.
But the turkey and gravy were wonderful, too. I insisted they let the turkey rest covered for 30 minutes after it came out of the flaming oven. That made it very juicy. And the hostess made an incredible Grand Marnier stuffing which included slivered almonds. Very delish.
And lastly, I did what I said I was going to do: I made 5 packets of Knorr Roasted Turkey Gravy and added NOTHING to it. They raved and raved about the delicious gravy and were a little puzzled when I made it at my house without any Turkey drippings. I just said, "Oh, I have ways." When I knew they all liked the gravy, I confessed to my devious method.
It was a wonderful, fun day with loving friends. Something my family never did. I am very blessed. Hope yours was just as good as mine.
